The CANVAS is made from cotton sarees kept in layers and glued using paste (niryas kalpa) of Tamarind seeds and wood apple gum, Kaitha. When the desired thickness is achieved it is sun dried along with soft clay stone powder and Tamarind paste. After drying the surface is rubbed with rounded stone, sea shell or piece of wood. In some paintings, Tusser silk is used as canvas.
